Over time, biological systems lose efficiency, leading to visible signs of aging like wrinkles, dullness, and sagging.
Scientists have identified 12 key mechanisms at the core of this process.
They are presented in the visual in 3 categories:
Primary mechanisms:
Primary mechanisms are the root causes of skin aging, such as DNA damage from UV exposure or the shortening of telomeres (the protective caps on our chromosomes)
This damage can reduce the skin's ability to regenerate, leading to fine lines, dark spots, and a rougher texture over time.
Antagonist mechanisms:
These processes are part of the body's defense systems but can become harmful when they persist.
For example, processes such as oxidative stress—intensified by environmental factors like pollution, stress, or inadequate nutrition—can compromise cellular health and contribute to visible signs of aging, such as uneven skin tone or a loss of elasticity.
Integrative mechanisms:
These combine the effects of various damages, amplifying the aging process.
For instance, impaired cell communication and stem cell exhaustion can slow down skin renewal, leading to slack, tired-looking skin with less bounce and vitality.

Primary factors are fundamental mechanisms that trigger cellular damage and contribute to the progression of skin aging.
1) Genomic instability
Genomic instability, caused by accumulated damage to DNA from environmental and internal sources, disrupts cellular function and accelerates the aging process by impairing the cell’s ability to repair itself.
2) Telomere shortening
Telomere shortening, the gradual loss of protective caps on chromosomes, is a key part of aging that reduces a cell's ability to divide and function properly.
3) Epigenetic alterations
Epigenetic alterations, which involve changes in how genes are regulated without altering the DNA sequence, accumulate with age and disrupt normal cellular functions.
4) Loss of proteostasis
Loss of proteostasis, the disruption of the cell's ability to maintain and recycle proteins, leads to the accumulation of damaged or misfolded proteins, which accelerates aging.
5) Macroautophagy abnormalities
Macroautophagy, a process that removes and recycles damaged cellular components, becomes less efficient with age, leading to the buildup of cellular waste and impaired cell function.
In the skin, primary aging factors may alter repair processes, slow regeneration, and affect collagen production, possibly leading to thinner, less elastic, and dull skin.

The antagonistic hallmarks, which reflect responses to damage, play a more nuanced role in the aging process.
For example, trophic signaling and anabolic reactions activated by nutrient sensing have beneficial actions in youth but are largely pro-ageing later on.
1) Cellular senescence
Cellular senescence occurs when cells stop dividing but remain active, often due to stress like DNA damage or telomere shortening.
While senescence is a natural part of the aging process, it can also lead to negative consequences over time. Senescent cells release pro-inflammatory factors that disrupt surrounding tissue and normal cell functions.
2) Mitochondrial dysfunction
Mitochondria are small compartments within human cells notably responsible for producing the energy required for essential processes. When mitochondria stop functioning properly, cells lose efficiency, accelerating aging and reducing repair capacity.
3) Deregulation of nutritional control
